What Else Can Leave Moisture Near a Gable Vent?
A roof leak can travel. Water entering at a ridge, roof-mounted vent, flashing joint, fastener, or damaged shingle may follow decking or framing until it reaches the gable end. The wall assembly deserves equal attention. Gaps around exterior trim, failed joints, cracked cladding, a damaged vent frame, or poorly integrated water-management layers can send rain behind the siding and into the same attic corner. Calling every wet gable a roofing-shingle problem can lead to the wrong trade repairing the wrong surface.
Condensation can mimic rain entry too. Broad dampness across roof sheathing, moisture on many fastener tips, or recurring wetness without a matching storm direction may point toward humid attic air, air leakage from the living space, or an exhaust duct problem. Plumbing and HVAC equipment or drains can add other sources. More than one condition can exist at the same time.
Use the moisture pattern to build a testable question: Did water start at the vent, arrive from above, move through the wall, or form inside the attic? A careful inspection tries to answer that question instead of naming the nearest visible component.
